During 2007 and 2008, the transportation sector world-wide experienced the "Perfect Storm." Several years ago, the U.S. EPA announced changes in diesel fuel composition, along with design changes in diesel engines to meet the standards of the Clean Air Act. The industry knew there were some dramatic issues ahead. The wild card that no one expected is the unprecedented increases in the cost of diesel fuel. Certainly these changes now constitute the "Perfect Storm" for transportation worldwide.

EGR technology has helped control emissions,
but the industry has been slow to "buy in".

Here are some of the challenges facing the transport industry:

• The transport industry now has new technology mandated for 2010, and this will likely bring new technical challenges to go with the historical increase in distillate fuel cost experienced in 2007 and 2008.
• EGR engine technology, mandated 1/07, has proven to be costly, and the industry has  not embraced this new technology.
• There is increasing pressure to mandate lower emissions in older units and reefers. 
• Companies are resisting purchase of the new technology, and leaning toward retaining older units and re-powering.
